After following these steps you are going to have a little drawer that holds exactly what you need and even better… you will be able to find everything.
This post is all about the 5 steps you need to take to organize a junk drawer.
5 Easy Steps To Organize a Junk Drawer
1. Take It All Out.
This might seem like an easy step, but it can feel overwhelming right from the start. Just do it. Take it all out. Most of it doesn’t belong in there anyhow. Trust me. I know. I had dog nail clippers in mine and even an old note that needed to be tossed… and a weird laundry bag holder ended up in there. Dump it. And have fun with it!
2. Sort.
Once it’s all out on a flat surface it’s time to sort it all. Always start with trash. Most likely you will find garbage in that little drawer. Next, take the things away that don’t belong in that drawer- like dog nail clippers. Next, pile things together that you want to keep in there. Try to sort them into categories so they are easier to contain later.
3. Clean.
Next, I took the time to vacuum my drawer. It managed to collect a decent amount of dust and dirt. I used my mini dust buster, but I could have just as easily taken out the felt liner and wiped it all down. It’s worth doing this. Why not? It’s all out of there and hopefully you won’t be doing this again in the near future. So, go on… clean it out!
4. Make Sure The Drawer Has What You Need.
Ok… if you’re wondering what that I mean by that… I do have some opinions on what should be in your junk drawer. Some of the things in that drawer will be unique to your house. For instance, I store my outdoor fan remotes in there. You most likely won’t. I also keep playing cards in there. Why? Because our family often plays cards at dinner. Weird, but true. Here is a list of the things that you might want to keep in your junk drawer: Scissors, Tape, Glue, Sticky Notes, Tape Measure, Pens, Pencils, Erasers, Keys, Spare Change or Small Bills, Screw Driver, Lighters, Safety Pins and Maybe Even Gum.
5. Organize.
Ok Everyone… it’s my favorite time! Time to organize and put it all away neatly. I used some small containers I had in my house. I will most likely upgrade these in the future, but for now they work. You can use older Tupperware for this or even small boxes that you haven’t thrown out yet. Get creative or go to the Container Store. There is no wrong answer here. The real message is to contain your small items so they are easy to grab and no longer thrown in a messy pile.
