This post is all about the entryway closet organization ideas used to rework my messy space.
Best Entryway Closet Organization Ideas
1. Start By Emptying The Space
The entryway closet before the makeover.
In order to make a space really functional, you have to start by removing everything. Starting from a clean slate will better help you see your entryway closet in a whole new light. After removing everything, you can make decisions about what NEEDS to live in this space and what types of containers are needed to better organize your things.
2. Purge
First, spread everything out on the floor and purge all items you no longer want or use. (You might find items you can donate right now that will help someone else- I found two coats to donate this winter!) Next, sort all of the items and return things that don’t belong here to their original homes. A closet tends to be a hidden drop zone for things we don’t need at the moment. Staying organized means you have to revisit this space to clear it on a regular basis.
3. Clean
Look at that cleared-out closet with so much potential… and look at all of that dirt! Before we rush to put things back, take a moment to deep clean the entire closet. Vacuum the dirt and wipe down the doors, surfaces, and walls to clear them from dust and make them smell fresh. Do not skip this step! It’s well worth the ten minutes it will take to clean.
4. Storage Solutions
Take a look at your space and at the items you plan to back into it. Be real with yourself, can you make it all fit? Do you have containers in your home (unused baskets, bins, or even boxes) you can repurpose to use in this space? Get creative before you purchase new items.
If you need additional storage solutions, a door organizer is something to consider.
Here are three options to consider:

(Price at time of post: $29.88)
This organizer is quick to assemble, adds five basket shelves of storage, and is an inexpensive option for an entryway closet. This system is very easy to assemble – it doesn’t require any tools and it took me about ten minutes to put it together. This is a great option for your project if white works for you are looking for a budget-friendly storage solution.

(Price at time of post: $33.89 -$6 coupon offer = $27.89)
This organizer comes with 6 adjustable basket shelves (3 shallow and 3 deep) that you can arrange any way you like. It comes with 6 small hooks that can be used in so many ways like hanging spare keys, a dog leash, grocery bags, or hooking a lint brush on for easy access. It’s pretty quick to assemble and offers the option to hang it over the door (no tools required) or mount it to the door. I encourage you to hook it over the door as a trial before going straight for the mounting option.
Also, this system has a unique design that allows you to break it into two separate units. To add even more options, there are three basket dividers that can be used to separate items or to keep them upright. I could go on and on!

(Price at time of post: $123.55.)
The Container Store steps up its game on this door-organizing system. Overall, this is the most adaptable system I have seen on the market. You can choose a white or grey color and the length of the mounting bar can be cut in the store. Because the door mount allows for endless possibilities, you can opt to design your own.

I chose the black versatile basket shelving system from amazon. After putting together both systems, I decided the black system looks better in this closet and also is more adaptable to our needs. Instead of returning the white one, I am keeping it for my office closet door – look for that post in the future! The Container Store system might be my favorite, but I’m not ready for that investment yet!
5. Restock The Closet Mindfully
After you plan your storage solutions, it’s time to put everything away. In order to make things most functional, you need to curate your items.
Add items like:
- lint brushes
- umbrellas
- flashlights
- a rechargeable lantern
- a vacuum,
- a toolkit,
- fire extinguisher
- spare set of keys
Other Ideas:
You can add contact paper to a wall to add an element of design. In all honesty, I was excited to add this, but decided to add another closet rail to give us more coat space.
In sum, this project taught me that having a custom closet built does not mean your closet will be organized.
