Small Bedroom Closet Organization
What if you took your home organization to a whole new level? What would that look and feel like and would it bring changes to other areas of your life? That’s what I want to find out this year. I am organizing every area of my home and my life and I’m starting (like The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up suggests) with my clothes. Here’s how I took my small bedroom closet organization to a whole new level:
1. Declutter:
Let’s go! Take every single item of YOUR clothing from EVERYWHERE in your home and put it all in one pile – yes, I mean it. Pick up each item and decide if you want to keep it in your new space – or as Marie Kondo would say- decide if it brings you joy. Although it might look overwhelming, trust the process.
Here is a look at my pile during the process:
As much as I love the KonMari organizing style, I tweaked it a bit. I found it helpful to have a pen and paper with me to write down items I needed to replace, and things missing from my wardrobe, and I tagged clothing I felt I had to keep until I found a replacement. (The black sweater I wear all the time is faded, but I will keep it until the new one arrives.)
Here is a look at my Keep and Donate piles:
Make sure that you empty your closet completely. If you have other items in your closet besides clothes, take everything out so you can see your space in its entirety. If you leave items in the closet, you will have a harder time visualizing the space in a new way.
2. Decide How To Get Unwanted Clothing Out Of Your Home
After creating a pile of unwanted clothing, you need to have a plan to remove these items from your closet and your home. Before you just toss these clothes into a garbage bag, try the KonMari method instead. Take a moment to thank any items you are packing away, fold them neatly, and place them into a bag in a respectful way. I always opt to donate my clothes, but some people would rather sell them.
Clothing Donation Options:
- Goodwill: Most of my donations end up at Goodwill. I think the main reason I choose this organization is the convenience. There are a few locations near me and I know it’s a community-based enterprise.
- The Salvation Army: If you’re looking for an easy and reliable place to donate clothes and household items, The Salvation Army might be the right spot for you. They have been around since 1865 so you can trust them to know how to handle your donations.
- Vietnam Veterans Of America: This organization posted on their website that they are in need of clothing donations. It’s good to know that what you donate is needed and will be used.
Companies That Help You Sell Your Clothes:
- Poshmark: If you’re looking for the most popular spot to list your items, you found it. Poshmark takes a flat rate fee of 20%, but it’s worth it for the ease of posting and shipping. This company makes selling seamless – people rave that it takes less than 60 seconds to post an item for sale. Also, they take both clothes from inexpensive fast fashion to high-end brands.
- Mercari: If you’re looking for ease when selling and buying, this is the company for you. Mercari has a free app and an easy-peasy shipping policy so you can list your things in minutes and ship them the same day. Just be careful not to buy too much! We are trying to declutter!
- ThredUp: From Gap to Gucci, this company will take most brands and will do all the work for you. You simply clean out your closet and throw your clothes into a ThredUp bag. They sell what sells (and you can take the money or credit on their site) and they take care of the leftover items responsibly. This a great option for anyone looking for the easiest way to clean out.
4. Reinvent Your Space
Once you fully empty your closet and you decide what to keep, it’s time to make your space work for you. Matching hangers is a great place to start! A closet with matching hangers is more functional, organized, and definitely more beautiful. Let’s look further into hangers:
- Wooden hangers:

- Metal Hangers
If space is what you need then metal hangers are here to save your closet. Not only are they slim and strong, but they are also thin and modern. They can be of great value to your new closet. Here is a great choice, but there are lots of other colors and shapes on the market:

- Shelf Dividers:
Even though shelves can seem like the perfect solution to your closet organization, they come with their own problems. Although shelves provide space to stack clothes and other items, they need structure to keep them neat. Shelf dividers help provide that structure.

- Over The Door Hooks
Another space saver is adding over-door hooks. Adding hooks allows you to quickly toss your clothes into a predictable place so they stay off the floor and out of piles.

Price at the time of the post: $19.99 and a 10% off coupon
Colors: black, white, black and white, silver, gold, bronze, retro red
- Bins and Baskets:
Not only are bins and baskets important for storage, but they can also add style and color to your closet. Before you start to order anything new, I would encourage you to pause. Although you are excited to finish this project, the most important aspect of the work is to make your closet functional. I would encourage you to use any containers you have in your home – even empty boxes as a placeholder in your space to be sure a box is a right solution. At first, you might think you need a bin to hold sweaters, but a clear shelf divider might be more functional. Pausing a week and working with your space will ensure you are purchasing the right items.
5. Decide What Works
After living with your closet decluttered and organized, it’s time to check in and decide what works and what doesn’t. As much as the space feels complete, it’s really not fully organized until you check in and make sure it’s working. If you have given yourself enough time with temporary bins and baskets, then it’s time to purchase beautiful permanent pieces for your closet. Make a list and make it beautiful!
