Are you looking for birthday gift traditions that will make your gift giving easier and more meaningful? We started this tradition 17 years ago and it’s still going strong.
Family birthdays can be fun and exciting, but they often come with stress to find just the right gifts. You might be trying to keep your giving even – either in spending or number of presents. Or, you might be looking for a more simple way to make birthdays special.
You are going to learn a simple way to introduce a tradition into your family that will make your birthdays feel even more special.
This post is all about simple birthday gift traditions that your family will love.
The Little Poem That Created Birthday Gift Traditions
Let me start with a little back story. My son was due on Christmas Day… ummm… because we celebrate Christmas, this kid was facing a lifetime of not having a birthday. Now, we could have celebrated his half-birthday and if he actually had been born on Christmas Day I would have. But, he came a little early so we went with it. I knew I needed a plan to keep his birthday special because it’s so close to Christmas and then I found it. A blogger (I think it was DesignMom.com) posted a poem that gave our family the gift of birthday traditions. It goes like this:
Something You Want, Something You Need, Something To Wear, Something To Read
This little poem carried the solution I needed and I wanted to share it with you. It gave me a way to make all of our birthday gifts even and gave the kids categories to choose from.
Something You Want
This is where my kids ask for their big ticket items. This is where they come up with what they really want for their big day. Here are a few recent asks:
- Unlimited Car Wash For A Year. (If you live in CT or NY check out SPLASH)
- Iphone 13 Mini (Check that out HERE)
- New Bedding (PBteen has some cool bedding for your teen)
Something You Need
This might be my favorite category. I love coming up with ideas of things the kids “need.” Usable gifts are just more fun to give. Try some practical gifts like these:
- Water bottles – Who doesn’t love a new hydroflask? (You can make them custom too)
- Gas Card for teens on the go (Check out this one from giftcardgranny.
- New School Backpack? (Try this one from northface)
Something To Wear
You can get more creative here. It doesn’t HAVE to be clothes. Think of all the cool things we actually “wear” like perfume, shoes, beauty products and in colder months you can gift new hats and mittens. Have fun with it.
- Necklaces- These have become super popular with teen girls. Click HERE to see.
- Who doesn’t love a classic pair of Chucks? Find your favorite pair HERE.
- What about a new pair of sunglasses? These AVIATORS never go out of style.
Something To Read
Obviously this is a great way to share your favorite books with loved ones, but this category can be more than books.
- You can write a handwritten letter to the person you love. This could possibly be the best gift idea for this category.
- You can gift them a journal. Click HERE to look at some cute ones I found.
- If you have an avid reader, you could gift a kindle. Check it out HERE.
If you want to create fun birthday gift traditions I hope you consider adding this little poem to your family. It has made our birthdays more meaningful in some ways and I have extended it to gifts for my friends as well.
