Do you need to create a vanity area in your home? I am excited to design a small space in my teen daughter’s room for her to get ready everyday. You can do it too!
I blinked and my daughter became a teen. I work really hard to keep my kids’ rooms up to date and it’s time to turn this seating area into a vanity area. I’ll be honest, I’m excited for this project!
You are going to learn about how I plan to turn this tiny window area into a fresh vanity area that (I hope) will be used everyday.
After looking at my plans for this space, my hope is that you will get brave with me and tackle a small area of your home to rework. We can do this!
This post is all about how I plan to transform a window space into a teen vanity area.
My Plan To Create A Teen Vanity Area:
-
Measure…Seriously… Measure
You honestly have to start your project with a tape measure. Trust me on this one. There will be so many things you might want, but you need to find what will fit into your space. I know you want to build a Pinterest board and start shopping, but just measure so you can find things that will actually work. And, don’t forget to consider how much space your chair or stool will need. Every measurement will help you gain clarity early on.

2. Build A Pinterest Board To Share Your Ideas
Ok… I LOVE Pinterest. Building a board of all of your ideas not only can create some excitement and some momentum, but it also allows you to share your visuals with your client… or teen daughter. Luckily, my daughter and I share similar views on furniture and we were able to narrow the main vanity furniture down quickly. If you haven’t jumped on to pinterest to use it for projects, what are you waiting for? Sign Up HERE to start pinning your next project!
3. Choose Your Main Piece For The Space
After getting the measurements and consulting with my daughter we easily chose a main vanity piece of furniture. I had it narrowed to two in my mind, but my daughter quickly chose the right one based on functionality.
The first one I was drawn to was the Malm Dressing Table by IKEA in white:
I love this table because of it’s clean modern look and it comes with a glass top to keep spills from ruining the finish. It would fit perfectly in the space and it would match the room, but it lacked on thing. STORAGE. It just doesn’t have enough storage to hold everything she has which would force us to add more storage to the space in other areas.
In the end she picked THE ALEX DESK by IKEA combined with a desk top:
This is basically a build your own desk system that will work perfectly for what she needs. Look at all of that storage! She can keep all of her products right in one spot. To dress this up and keep it clean and neat, I’m going to get quotes for a custom glass top for this piece. We have a local glass company, but I also saw a few online companies as well – I’ll keep you posted as to which was the best deal for a small project like this one.
4. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall…
For this project, the mirror is a go big or go home purchase. Luckily there is a wall outlet right where I need it to be – seriously that never happens! She wanted a mirror with lights and I found just the one:

How cute is this? I want to get this in the largest size possible and make it a real statement piece. The lights can be adjusted for the time of day and it even has a built-in phone charger. What else can you need?
5. The Chair Matters
You don’t need to have the vanity chair be a stand out part of the decor, but it matters what you put there. If you want to understate the seating, try a clear chair or a plain white stool. In this room, I think matching the desk chair on the other side of the room is important to keep the space uniform. It doesn’t need to be an exact match, but a stool with very similar fabric could work. My guess is that we will grab another desk chair. It’s cute:
You can find this chair HERE ON AMAZON.
She has this chair already as a desk chair. It’s comfortable and matches and it is completely adjustable which makes any vanity we choose a possibility. Oh, and it’s on sale!
6. Organization System
This vanity will need organizers in each drawer to keep everything tidy. I will be honest when I tell you that I won’t yet allow myself to take that step. At times I can get overwhelmed with home projects because I want them to be perfect. In this case, starting with the big pieces and stopping at that point will get the project ball rolling. I will never be finished until things are organized completely, but that will take more time and will be for another post. I promise to share the entire system I create! Remember, organizing is more than buying containers. It’s creating a system and a space that simplifies things and allows for items to be put away easily. Don’t skip this step, but don’t rush it!
